The Sandbox was first imagined in 2011 and is a part of Animoca Brands, a Hong Kong-based gaming company. The game started development in 2012 and later transitioned to the Ethereum blockchain when it rebranded into a decentralized, virtual space.

SAND is the native ERC-20 token of The Sandbox game, used for trading unique NFTs and other in-game assets. Since it's built on Ethereum, it’s fully compatible with other Ethereum-based tokens. Following the Ethereum Merge, SAND is now validated using a proof-of-stake (PoS) mechanism. There are currently 1.26 billion SAND tokens in circulation, with a maximum supply of 3 billion.

The Sandbox was founded in 2011 by Arthur Madrid and Sebastien Borget, both of whom are based in Hong Kong and run the gaming company Animoca Brands.
