Optimism was founded by the Optimism Foundation, a non-profit organization that's all about making blockchain better for everyone. The Foundation works on developing the Optimism ecosystem with a goal of keeping it decentralized, just like Ethereum. They don't rely on profit—funding comes from donations and grants. Their mission is to create infrastructure that will help public goods in the blockchain world grow and stick around long-term.

The circulating supply of OP is 1,006,141,600 at the time of writing.

The OP token is the main governance token for Optimism. If you hold OP, you get voting power, meaning you can have a say in big decisions like software updates, funding for public goods, and other important stuff that shapes the network. It’s all about making sure the community has a hand in the direction of the Optimism ecosystem.
