Cosmos was started by Jae Kwon in 2014, who later teamed up with Zarko Milosevic and Ethan Buchman to tackle the blockchain interoperability problem. In the same year, Kwon created Tendermint, an open-source software for launching blockchains, which is the backbone of the Cosmos network. Cosmos' native token, ATOM, was launched in 2017 via an ICO.

ATOM doesn’t have a fixed max supply. Instead, its supply is adjusted based on how much is staked at any given time. You can stake ATOM and also use it to participate in governance decisions within the Cosmos network.

Cosmos stands out for its innovative approach to blockchain interoperability. Unlike traditional systems that create wrapped or pegged tokens for asset transfer, Cosmos enables direct communication between blockchains, called "zones," through hubs. This eliminates the need for wrapping tokens or creating new versions on connected networks. With over 250 applications already running, including major players like Binance, Cosmos is rapidly expanding and offering a more seamless, decentralized solution for cross-chain interaction.
